Is it normal for toddlers to wake up on the wrong side of the bed?

My son is almost 2 and ever since he got up this morning he has been whiny and fussy. Are there days when children like grownups only for different reasons wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Or could my son be sick? He ate fine, doesn't have a fever or anything he's just incredibly grumpy.
