I'm painting my home interior and the dryer smell like kerosene and so do my clothes when they are dry.?

That happened when we had work done on our house, painted and refinished the hardwood floors. The washer & dryer were in the basement, and nothing was done down there, but my dryer smelled. I done some laundry, that didn't matter, that it smelled. Like cleaning rags, etc. The smell came out after several uses.
