Can only Moslems end Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism?

It took the Enlightenment to curtail Christian fundamentalism, and its Medieval terrorism of the Inquisition, etc. And even now, Christian fundamentalism would destroy secular society if it could. Islam has a few hundred years to catch up - or even recapture the civilization it embodied pre-Crusades. I can't see that happening while Madras schools persist - but by the same token, it seems to me religion based schools in the West also perpetuate outdated superstitions and world-view. In both cases, military or even local Government intervention will only create fierce opposition. So might we not do better leaving Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. to sort themselves out, rejecting the intolerable?
